Melania Trump now viewed favourably by majority of Americans: poll

A majority of Americans now view Melania Trump favourably, in a huge swing from last January although her husband cannot say the same, new polling numbers say.

In a Gallup Poll in January 2016, just 37 per cent of Americans viewed the first lady favourably. That number has spiked to 54 per cent in a new poll conducted between Dec. 4 and 11.

Those who held no opinion of Melania Trump fell from 26 per cent to 13 per cent which led to the majority of the change.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s numbers have remained fairly steady with his unfavourable (55 up to 56 per cent) and favourable (40 up to 41 per cent) numbers having barely changed.

It is not unusual for recent first ladies to be more popular than their husbands.

Michelle Obama was on average, about 12 percentage points more popular than her husband Barack Obama, while Laura Bush was generally a staggering 17 points above George W. Bush.

The exception to the rule was Hillary Clinton who was generally a point lower than her husband Bill Clinton while he held office.

While the gap between the Trumps is in the range of previous first couples, Melania Trump still lags behind all of her recent predecessors over their first year including Clinton.

Michelle Obama (61 per cent), Laura Bush (77 per cent) and Hillary Clinton (58 per cent) were each above Melania Trump during their first year.
