While listening to the U.S. Supreme Court’s oral arguments on former President Donald Trump’s claims of full immunity, I was troubled to hear the six conservative justices express a willingness for some level of immunity while carefully avoiding any reference to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
The conservative justices' agenda couldn’t be more obvious — to delay for as long as possible, ensuring that Trump’s federal trials would be pushed back until after the election. And if Trump wins in November, he would simply order his Justice Department appointees to permanently quash all his federal indictments.
Such a victory would also allow conservative Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito the option to retire, knowing that Trump-appointed replacements would keep the conservative majority in power for decades. Just imagine the fate of women’s rights? Or the Constitution that gets reinterpreted in the vision of this court?
