Assane Diao chooses Senegal: the Spanish press speaks of “theft”

It’s now official: Assane Diao, a promising 18-year-old winger born in Ndangane in 2005, has chosen to play for Senegal rather than Spain.

The former Real Betis player, currently in Italy with Como after a transfer this winter, has been called up by Senegalese coach Pape Thiaw for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against South Sudan and Togo.

Spain, which had hoped to convince Assane Diao to join its ranks, is having a hard time digesting this decision. The sports daily Marca even spoke of a “theft” orchestrated by the Senegalese Football Federation. This sentiment demonstrates the extent to which Spain considers Diao a gem it has just lost.

A choice that seemed inevitable

Assane Diao has already played for La Roja’s youth teams, from U18 to U21, gaining experience with the Spanish national teams. But despite this history, the player ultimately opted for his home country, Senegal, where he hopes to break through at the highest level.

The move comes as Diao has been shining for Como, scoring five goals in ten games since arriving in Italy. His rise to prominence has caught the attention of coach Pape Thiaw, who seized the opportunity to add him to his squad.

Spain disappointed, but not surprised

Cesc Fàbregas, Como coach and former Spanish international, anticipated this choice a few days ago, saying: “He has to choose, it’s difficult, but it’s also good because he deserves it. He has to manage it mentally.” A speech that suggested the battle was far from won for Spain.

For his part, Marca columnist Miguel Ángel Lara reports that Spain was hoping to add Diao to its senior team in the near future. “With Assane Diao, it’s clear he has the potential to join the senior team, but he has to take steps he doesn’t intend to take, even though Senegal has offered itself to him,” he writes.

By joining the Senegalese national team, Assane Diao has strengthened an already well-stocked attacking team, which has enthusiastically welcomed a young player with undeniable talent. The Lions of Teranga fans are now eagerly awaiting his debut in the green and yellow jersey.
