What’s the most treasured item in your wardrobe?
I have a green and blue mohair scarf from the Sixties that was my mum’s, so I’m very sentimental about it. It’s beautiful and quite unusual, very bright green and blue.
What item do you have too many of?
Sweatshirts. It’s a weird thing, I get so attached to them. I pick them up when I’m on tour like souvenirs. When they are really ancient and if they are nice cotton they become so cosy. I just can’t get rid of them.
How would you describe your style?
Off-duty I’m pretty casual, a bit boho, a little chic — boho chic, something like that. On stage it’s more graphic, textural. Things that have a good silhouette. The French designer Alexandre Vauthier is incredibly generous and lends me a lot of his wonderful clothes, like the incredible dress I wore to perform at Glastonbury in 2023, below. I called it the porcupine dress, as it had all these little black sequin spikes on it.
Where is your favourite place to shop?
Online is a dangerous place, as you can end up buying a shitload of stuff. I prefer to go into a shop because I really like to touch something and feel it — that’s important. I don’t like shopping much though, if I’m completely honest, although if I’m travelling it feels new, it feels novel. It’s always fun to go shopping in New York, Antwerp, Paris or Italy.
Which designer or label do you rate the most?
There’s Commes des Garçons and I have been admiring the Dutch designer Duran Lantink — I think they’re so interesting. Then I love Alaïa and vintage as well.
Whose style do you admire?
Well, there’s Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore, Taylor Russell, Emma Corrin and Chloë Sevigny. And lately there’s Pedro Pascal; I think he looks very cool.
Where’s the best place to shop for vintage?
It’s funny with the vintage thing because it seems to get harder and harder to buy good vintage. I used to go to Rellik [in west London] quite a bit, but to be honest, I’m not entirely sure where I’d go now.
What do you admire in other people’s style?
I’m always amazed at people who go out in things that look like they’ve been ironed. I admire people who can co-ordinate things — somebody stylish is able to put things together in a particular way. I think that goes beyond fashion somehow.

What’s the most expensive thing you own?
I’ve got a few Gucci items and a very, very old Balenciaga silk wraparound blouse; it’s vintage so it’s quite a treasure. Also some older Alaïa pieces too.
What do you wear to put out the bins?
Anything I can get a hold of because I forget to take them out, so it’s a mad rush at 7am. Usually it’s a dressing gown tied with one of those latex fitness bands.
What will you be wearing this summer?
As little as possible, I hope.
