MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Today is National Armed Forces Day — a time to recognize men and women all across the country currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

A special event was held in Mobile to honor our heroes. A celebration took place at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park.

National Armed Forces Day is on May 17 every year to recognize the men and women currently serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Space Force.

South Alabama Veterans Council President Robert Barrow said there was also a tribute today for a special group of people.

“We give a special tribute today, in addition to Armed Forces Day, to our Gold Star families. If you’re unaware what a Gold Star family is, that’s a family whose service member was lost in combat, and we have five of those here today. So that’s a significant event,” Barrow said.

There was also a parachute jump and meals-ready-to-eat competition.

The South Alabama Veterans Council organized today’s event in at the battleship.
